Destination summary – Isle of Mull Photo Workshop

The Isle of Mull lies off the west coast of Scotland and is the second largest of the Inner Hebridean Islands. This Isle of Mull photo workshop will commence in the City of Glasgow where we’ll meet up before travelling  north via Loch Lomond to the ferry port of Oban. The crossing to Mull takes around 50 minutes.

This Isle of Mull Photo Workshop explores the seascapes and landscapes of one of Scotland’s most loved Inner Hebridean Islands, the beautiful Island of Mull.

Wildlife also plays a big part of this workshop with the Puffin Colony on the Treshnish Island of Lunga being a highlight.  The nearby Island of Staffa and  Fingal’s Cave also form part of an island wildlife tour by boat. Seabirds, Dolphin and Grey Seals are often on show.

Additionally the beautiful laid back spiritual Island of Iona features a 6th century Abbey, where St Colomba arrived from Ireland to spread Christianity through Scotland. Its white sand beaches, bluebell woods and  photogenic cottages overlooking  aquamarine seas also add to mix.

Isle of Mull Photo Workshop

Mull is famous for its wild landscapes of Mountains, Glens, Lochs and variety of wildlife  the iconic Puffin on the nearby smaller islands will be our main wildlife focus.

Your Isle of Mull Photo workshop will begin exploring and capturing the north of the Island , the Salen Boats, Calgary Bay and Eas Fors coastal waterfall. Your base for the first night will be  in colourful Tobermory  before making our way south through the mountains and along the Ross of Mull to the small village of Fionnphort.

Iona, Staffa and Lunga 

Fionnphort is Mull’s most westerly settlement and the gateway to the little Island of Iona, famed for its 6th century Benedictine Abbey. Iona is one of the oldest religious settlements in Western Europe and the site where St Colomba established and spread Christianity in Scotland.

It’s also believed that this is where the Book of Kells was produced by the Monks of Iona. You can explore the small village, Abbey and  beautiful aquamarine sandy bays.

Fionnphort is also the starting point for a boat trip out to Staffa and Fingals cave. On Staffa you’ll have the opportunity to explore for an hour before heading out to the Treshnish Islands and the little Isle of Lunga.

Lunga is one of the best places in the UK to view and photograph Puffin. They nest on the edge of the Cliffs and you can literally have them right at your feet making them easily photographed and observed. You’ll have around 2hrs on Lunga which is plenty time to capture the Puffin , Razorbill and Cormorant going about their daily routine and enjoy a picnic lunch while there.

While based at Fionnphort we’ll also explore and photograph the pink granite coastline at dusk and dawn before we head back to Craignure on our final full day. We’ll travel through the wild and atmospheric Glenmore and the lush bay around Lochbuie, Moy Castle and the standing stone circle nearby.

Once back on the mainland we travel back to Glasgow arriving early evening.

Your Isle of Mull workshop includes:

Pick up and drop off in Glasgow, transport to all locations, ferries to Mull and Iona, Boat trip out to Staffa and Lunga to visit the Puffin colony and other sea birds. As always tuition and creative guidance will be on hand.  Plus a full itinerary, image feedback and Breakfast provisions and the Cottage venue.

Venues 

1 nights Park Lodge Hotel in colourful Tobermory – single occupancy room with breakfast.

3 nights comfortable  bunk house cottage accommodation with self catering facilities, wood burner stove and comfortable lounge.

*Fionnphort is a small village in a remote part of the island and a great base to explore Iona and the peninsula. The Cottage Bunkhouse is privately owned, very comfortable and for our exclusive use.

Room share – Two bedrooms ( one male / one female ) offer two sets of bunkbeds in each of the two rooms.

The self catering cottage features a lounge with wood burning stove, a fully equipped kitchen and dining room.

It also has two separate shower rooms   ( male and female ) with all bedding and towels supplied.  It’s a great venue to return to in the evening, edit some images  and share a drink by the fire.

There may be an option of a single occupancy room supplement if you prefer – this is subject to availability at time of booking.

Meals – breakfast provisions, snacks and refreshments are provided for the Cottage. Lunches and dinners will be at the Park Lodge Hotel and a local restaurant / pubs in Fionnphort.

Getting there  I recommend arriving in Glasgow the night before we depart for Oban and the ferry. Glasgow is served by an international airport ( or Edinburgh which is an hour by train) and good rail connections. The Premier Inn at Pacific Quay is by the banks of the Clyde and also has some good photo opportunities. It also has a restaurant bar and cafe.

Meals – packed lunches or cafes along the way. Dinner at local restaurants /pubs as appropriate to our schedule.

Essential equipment camera, ( the best camera is the one you have)  lenses with a recommended focal length from 16mm ( wide angle )  to 200mm (telephoto as a minimum) and a good quality tripod. I use 16-35 / 24-70 / 70-200 or equivalent of. The Puffin on Lunga are easy to photograph with telephoto and mid range zoom. If you need advise please just ask.

Non essential but recommended Polariser, neutral density graduated and straight neutral density filters can be useful, a 6 stop little stopper to 10 stop, big stopper. I use Lee ND filters both hard and soft, the drop in type rather than screw in.  If you can bring a  laptop with Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop or other image editing software might be useful if the weather gets the better of us on some days. A good quality waterproof camera bag is also recommended.
